Warehouse plant editions for the Blind

Spanning three floors of a high rise in San Francisco, this 40,sf headquarters for one of the oldest social-services organizations in California represents the latest in design, technology, and training for blind and low-vision individuals. The space encompasses optometry exam rooms, a retail store showcasing adaptive technology devices, training rooms for hands-on learning of Braille and adaptive technology, a training kitchen, and 11 dorm rooms where up to 29 clients can stay onsite for immersive training. The project team developed subtle design features to ensure the spaces function well for everyone. Wayfinding is aided by a ring of polished concrete encircling the public areas on each floor, while open spaces are defined by metal floor transition strips to give an indication of spatial demarcation to cane users. In training rooms, bold-colored felt-wrapped acoustic panels are used because rich, saturated colors can be discerned by many with low vision.

Flood waters are rising across the province. In the middle of the turmoil a father approaches Gamache, pleading for help in finding his daughter. As crisis piles upon crisis, Gamache tries to hold off the encroaching chaos, and realizes the search for Vivienne Godin should be abandoned.

But with a daughter of his own, he finds himself developing a profound, and perhaps unwise, empathy for her distraught father. As the rivers rise, and the social media onslaught against Gamache becomes crueler, a body is discovered.

And in the tumult, mistakes are made. At a time when there have never been more ways to connect with one another, it has also never been easier to lose track of the people and passions we hold most dear.

The demands of the day can leave us feeling exhausted and uninspired, while alerts and notifications constantly tug at our attention. We fall into unhealthy patterns that can be all too difficult to break. Written from friend to friend, one day at a time, A Mindful Year invites you to start a new pattern—one that begins with taking just a few quiet moments to reconnect with what is most important, each day.

As practical as it is inspirational, A Mindful Year marries moments of mindful reflection with calls to action—daily nuggets of wisdom paired with friendly encouragement to live in a way that is grounded, authentic, and compassionate. Thankfully, simply being open and attentive to the present moment can help us find a sense of space and ease and get back on the right track.

With A Mindful Year as your guide, reconnect with what matters most. In The Life You Can Save, Singer makes the compelling case for the fact that our donations to effective charities make a dramatic difference in the lives of others without diminishing the quality of our own. Yet while thousands of children die each day, we spend money on things we take for granted and would hardly notice if they were not there.

Is that wrong? If so, how far does our obligation to the poor go? Using ethical arguments, provocative thought experiments, illuminating examples, and case studies of charitable giving, Singer shows that our current response to world poverty is not only insufficient but ethically indefensible.

He dissects and refutes perceived impediments to giving and provides a number of practical guidelines for making charitable contributions. This book furthers Peter Singer's urgent call to action and serves as a hopeful primer on the power of compassion, when mixed with rigorous investigation and careful reasoning, to lift others out of despair. Learn how you can be part of the solution, doing good for others while adding fulfillment to your own life. When Roy meets a wealthy widow online, he can hardly believe his luck.

But who is Roy, really? Spanning almost a century, this stunning and suspenseful feat of storytelling interweaves the present with the past. As the clock turns back and the years fall away, long-hidden secrets are forced into the light. Some things can never be forgotten. Or forgiven. Marital strife and divorce can be your chance to profoundly transform yourself, your mindset and your relationship with a more harmonious and steady vision. What if you emerged from your divorce stronger and more resilient than ever before?

Better Apart is the first book to apply the life-changing, healing wisdom of meditation and yoga, combined with practical advice, to help anyone going through the painful and seemingly intractable realities of divorce.

Gabrielle Hartley and Elena Brower are warm and caring guides who can help you compassionately part from your partner. Whether your separation is amicable, or your ex is combative, Better Apart can help you find peace, calm, and hope.

Blending practical advice from a legal perspective together with spiritual wisdom, Gabrielle and Elena are experts and realists who have created a simple five-step process that uses original meditations, perspective-shifting exercises, and fresh suggestions to help navigate the common legal and emotional pitfalls of divorce. Together, they show you how to meaningfully shift your mindset and to move forward though any—or all—parts of this emotionally fraught process.

What do these three accomplishments have in common? Simple lessons, but the results are radical. As we face an epidemic of parental anxiety, Woj is here to say: relax. Talk to infants as if they are adults. Allow teenagers to pick projects that relate to the real world and their own passions, and let them figure out how to complete them. Above all, let your child lead. Change your parenting, change the world. From millennials seeking employment in the sharing economy to Gen Xers telecommuting to Baby Boomers creating a meaningful second act, the line that separates who we are from the work we do is blurrier than ever.

Leah Weiss explains why this false dichotomy can be destructive to both our mental health and our professional success. The bad news, says Weiss, is that nothing provides more opportunities for negative emotions—anxiety, anger, envy, fear, and paranoia, to name a few—than the dynamics of the workplace. But the good news is that these feelings matter. How we feel at and about work matters—to ourselves, to the quality of our work, and ultimately to the success of the organizations for which we work.

The path to productivity and success, says Weiss, is not to change jobs, to compartmentalize our feelings, or to create a false "professional" identity—but rather to listen to the wisdom our feelings offer. Using mindfulness techniques, we can learn how to attend to difficult feelings without becoming subsumed by them; we can develop an awareness of our bigger picture goals that orients us and allows us to see purpose in even the most menial tasks. In How We Work, Weiss offers a set of practical, evidence-based strategies for practicing mindfulness in the real world, showing readers not just how to survive another day, but how to use ancient wisdom traditions to sharpen their abilities, enhance their leadership and interpersonal skills, and improve their satisfaction.

But few of us know just how profoundly these diurnal patterns affect our overall health. A growing body of research on chronobiology reveals just how sensitive the human body is to these rhythms all the way down to the genetic level.

Our "clock genes" control more than we realize, and small changes can make the difference between battling our bodies, and effortlessly managing weight, sleep, stress, inflammation, and more.

Marrying ancient Ayurvedic wisdom with the latest scientific research, Dr. With diagnostic quizzes to determine your specific mind-body type, you will learn to adapt you schedule for effortless wellness for life.

From the Supreme Court to the conference room to the classroom, women are interrupted far more often than their male counterparts. In the lab, researchers found that female executives who speak more often than their peers are rated 14 percent less competent, while male executives who do the same enjoy a 10 percent competency bump.

The 5 Second Rule is a simple, one-size-fits-all solution for the one problem we all face—we hold ourselves back. In this generation-defining self-help guide, a superstar blogger cuts through the crap to show us how to stop trying to be "positive" all the time so that we can truly become better, happier people. He tells it like it is—a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today.

Manson makes the argument, backed both by academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but on learning to stomach lemons better. Human beings are flawed and limited—"not everybody can be extraordinary, there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault. Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties, once we stop running and avoiding and start confronting painful truths, we can begin to find the courage, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, curiosity, and forgiveness we seek.

While money is nice, caring about what you do with your life is better, because true wealth is about experience. Like most people who try to change and fail, I assumed that I was the problem. Then one afternoon--after another failed attempt to get motivated to exercise--I accidentally started my first mini habit.

I initially committed to do one push-up, and it turned into a full workout. I was shocked. This "stupid idea" wasn't supposed to work. I was shocked again when my success with this strategy continued for months and to this day. I had to consider that maybe I wasn't the problem in those 10 years of mediocre results.

Maybe it was my prior strategies that were ineffective, despite being oft-repeated as "the way to change" in countless books and blogs. My suspicions were correct. As I sought understanding, I found a plethora of scientific studies that had answers, with nobody to interpret them correctly.

Based on the science--which you'll find peppered throughout Mini Habits--we've been doing it all wrong. You can succeed without the guilt, intimidation, and repeated failure associated with such strategies as "getting motivated," New Year's Resolutions, or even "just doing it. Most popular strategies don't work well because they require you to fight against your subconscious brain a fight not easily won. It's only when you start playing by your brain's rules and taking your human limitations seriously--as mini habits show you how to do--that you can achieve lasting change.

Animals obtain their nutrition from the consumption of other organisms. Depending on their diet, animals can be classified into the following categories: plant eaters herbivores , meat eaters carnivores , and those that eat both plants and animals omnivores. The nutrients and macromolecules present in food are not immediately accessible to the cells. There are a number of processes that modify food within the animal body in order to make the nutrients and organic molecules accessible for cellular function. As animals evolved in complexity of form and function, their digestive systems have also evolved to accommodate their various dietary needs.

As you've probably heard by now, giant hogweed, an invasive species of plant that can leave you with third-degree burns or blind, was recently discovered in Virginia. But what you might not know is that researchers previously found the plant in Illinois, too — specifically, it's been spotted in Cook, DuPage and Lake counties. Luckily for you — and your nightmares — researchers at the Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health at the University of Georgia run an online mapping system to record when and where invasive species are found. The real-time tracker, dubbed the Early Detection and Distribution Mapping System, provides state, county, point and GIS data for invasive species, including giant hogweed.

A team of scientists at UC Berkeley used a breakthrough gene therapy to help blind mice gain sight, and some on the team think the same therapy could eventually be used to help cure blindness in humans. A month after the team injected a gene for a green-light receptor into the eyes of blind mice, they showed signs of gaining sight, such as being able to identify and navigate around obstacles nearly as easily as mice without vision problems. The results of the study were published in Nature on March The once-blind mice who received the gene therapy were also able to detect motion and changes in brightness, recognize patterns, and see enough detail on an iPad to distinguish letters.
