Mining waste generated from aluminium production The production of aluminium involves three main stages: mining bauxite ore, refining bauxite to alumina Al2O3 , and then smelting alumina to produce aluminium.

Bauxite comes from open mines mainly located in tropical and subtropical regions. On average it takes 4 to 5 tonnes of bauxite to produce 2 tonnes of alumina, yielding 1 tonne of aluminium. The main solid by-product of the alumina extraction Bayer process is red mud and roughly 3 tonnes is left for every tonne of alumina.

Creating A Value Stream Map

This is a step by step guide to creating a current state value stream map, the first step in working towards your ideal state value stream and a truly lean system. Your current state value stream map is a team effort that is conducted by those people who are involved in the process, at the actual process, not by an expert locked in a room with a pile of procedures. Your Value stream map is a representation of the flow of materials from supplier to customer through your organization as well as the flow of information. This enables you to see at a glance where the delays are in your process, any restraints and excessive inventory. Your current state map is the first step in working towards your ideal state for your organization. Value stream mapping VSM is a team exercise and should involve representatives from all of the areas within the process being mapped, this process should be facilitated and led by an expert with experience in creating value stream maps. A value stream map is best created by hand using a pencil you will need to make frequent corrections and changes on a sheet of A3 paper. It is better to create by hand and involve the entire team in its creation rather than have an expert take the information and return later with a finished map! Firstly we need to decide what it is exactly that we wish to map, in a company with many products there may have to be some initial work done to identify which product or family group of products that should be mapped, we may decide to go with highest volume or value, or take a longer term strategic look at those product ranges that we expect to do more business with in the future or we may be guided by our customers as to what to map.

How To Chart (Map) Your Process

Manufacturing is the processing of raw materials or parts into finished goods through the use of tools, human labor, machinery, and chemical processing. Large-scale manufacturing allows for the mass production of goods using assembly line processes and advanced technologies as core assets. Efficient manufacturing techniques enable manufacturers to take advantage of economies of scale , producing more units at a lower cost. It is often reported on by the conference board , and well examined by economists. Humans have historically sought ways to turn raw materials, such as ore, wood, and foodstuffs into finished products, such as metal goods, furniture, and processed foods. How products are manufactured has changed over time. On one end of the spectrum, humans manufacture products by hand or through the use of basic tools using more traditional processes. This type of manufacturing is associated with decorative art, textile production, leatherwork, carpentry, and some metalwork.

Statistical process control SPC is a method of quality control which employs statistical methods to monitor and control a process. This helps to ensure that the process operates efficiently, producing more specification-conforming products with less waste rework or scrap. SPC can be applied to any process where the "conforming product" product meeting specifications output can be measured.

Metal is part of our everyday lives and though metal fabrication is a massive, global business, those outside the industry are often oblivious to what it actually is. In simple terms, it is the process by which sheet metal is manipulated to create structures, products and components. This can include design, fabrication and installation and typically requires both machine engineering and automation as well as manual labour and skill. Creating the finished pieces requires precise work and a portfolio of different skills and expertise as each part has to be made to match the design and specification. Metal fabrication is used to create many of the structures we come across in our daily lives, from handrails on stairs in the supermarket, metal staircases around the outside of a building to fencing around the car park, metal signage for shop fronts, stainless steel planters, bicycle racks and metal playground equipment like swing frames.

A value stream map illustrates the flow of materials and information from supplier to customer. Value stream mapping VSM is a lean manufacturing technique used to analyze, design, and manage the flow of materials and information required to bring a product to a customer. VSM helps identify waste and streamline the production process. The first step in value stream mapping is to create a current state map. This map can help identify waste such as delays, restrictions, inefficiencies, and excess inventories. These are then eliminated in the ideal state map, which gives the organization a working plan to achieve lean efficiency. Value stream maps are most commonly used in lean manufacturing, but identifying the value stream—the sequence of activities required to design, produce, or provide goods and services to customers—is a beneficial practice for any company in any industry.

This recipe, while it may seem straightforward, threw me for a loop. I roasted 7 heads of cauliflower until I got it just right.
